The third iteration in the People’s Homes series is focused on intergenerational belonging, caregiving, and caretaking in San Antonio, Texas. In this project, the traditional use of a residential flag is reframed to represent an intergenerational relationship and demonstrate something personally meaningful in these connections. We invited representatives from six local cultural organizations to select and interview an intergenerational pair. Their stories, along with participant portraits and interviews, are printed in a newsprint publication. Newspapers are distributed in custom newspaper boxes that often hold commercial publications and advertisements. In their place, passersby are invited to take a free newspaper and learn about elders in their community. The exhibition featured objects, archival materials, photographs, and interviews that were selected and made in collaboration with community members ranging from musicians, salvagers, and mechanics to grocery store owners and DJs. Rather than collecting objects, we highlighted 50 sites on campus and stories that go along with them. Each site was selected and narrated by a professor, student, graduate, or staff member and marked by a public sign. An online museum collection features archival and supplemental imagery for each site and an interview with the contributor. The mobile site also allows visitors to connect to sites on campus through a GPS-based map and learn about histories of the university, of locations you might walk past every day and otherwise not know about. 2016 IN COLLABORATION WITH NOLAN CALISCH AND HARRELL FLETCHER
